- Finalised in 1968
- Standard of 7-bit code to represent numbers, letters & punctuation marks.Functions:-- To achieve compatibility between various types of data processing equipment making it possible for the components to communicate each other.
- Enables manufactures to produce components that are assured to operate correctly in computer.
- Enables humans interact with computer.
- Enables users to purchase components that are compatible with their computer configurations.
